superhuman

All Jo Snow ever wanted was to be comfortable with their identity and at home in their body. Finally, they can begin.

Superhuman is an ongoing documentary project that Alex Kim has been creating with their story partner, Jo Snow.

The first cut of this documentary won First Place in Hearst’s Innovative Storytelling and Audience Engagement Competition.

More on this documentary:

During my senior year of college, a good friend of mine, Jo, came to me with the news that they were transitioning.

I immediately offered my heartfelt congratulations and support.

Jo then entrusted me with documenting their journey. I was deeply moved by this, and I’ve done my best to honor that trust.

Most of my films lean toward vérité: unscripted, guided by life as it unfolds. And Jo’s story was no different. There was no set plan — I simply followed their life, capturing the journey they were allowing me to be a part of.

Then, COVID hit. Jo couldn’t afford the upfront cost of top surgery, so we organized a Zoom fundraiser by screening an early cut of the film.

Together, we raised over $11,000, which completely covered their costs. Once Jo’s insurance came through, the remaining funds were donated to #FORTHEGWORLS, a nonprofit supporting Black trans folks.

Though it’s been years since that first screening, this remains one of my most meaningful projects. We’ve filmed more since, and I hope to one day find the time and support to finish the documentary.
